The Fold (2008)

The Fold

These days technology has advanced so much that anyone with a few hundred dollars can buy a video camera and a computer and make a movie.  They can get a free online account and post their footage to the web so that anyone can check it out.  That's a great situation to be in.  Sure, a lot of the stuff that gets created isn't very good, but every artistic medium has that issue.  At least now, people have the opportunity to go out there and try to film something without having to pitch an idea to a major film company.  The end result is often a low budget version of something you've already seen a thousand times, but every once in a while you get something completely new that never would have been made if a major company had been involved.  That is the case with The Fold.

Directed by Matt Lambert and written by Matt Lambert, Polly Frost and Ray Sawhill, The Fold is basically a dreamy, philosophical six-part sci-fi, sex-comedy web series.  Can you wrap your head around that?  Well I bet no one at a network or film studio could either and THAT is why it's so great that people can do these things themselves these days with very little money.  I can't imagine trying to pitch this thing to someone.  When they asked me to review it, I read their description and still had no clue what the hell they had made.  However, after watching the first three episodes of The Fold I can tell you that it's fun, it's sexy and it's relatively well made!  Some of their sets are actually pretty impressive.  The story is far out.  The acting varies from actor to actor, but overall it has the feel of those weird, low-budget British sci-fi sitcoms.  Imagine a softcore porno version of a Dr. Who story...with more comedy.  There are lots of boobs.  If you like boobs and zany storylines, you'll probably like The Fold.  If you don't want to see boobs you should definitely stay the hell away from this show!  Trying to describe the story itself would be tough without ruining it for you, so just go to their website (http://thefold.tv) and watch it for yourself!  That is if you can watch it on your computer.  It actually won't play for me, so I had to get them to send me a DVD version.  I guess that's one of the disadvantages to this new computer world!  Anyway, I'm curious what this team could do with a feature film!

Skin-o-meter: 4 out of 5 (So many boobs that I lost count!  Very softcore sex scenes.)
