Cannibal Flesh Riot! (2006)

Cannibal Flesh Riot

If you were to cross a redneck version of film Plan 9 From Outer Space
with a cannibalistic version of the film Clerks and have them take place in
a cemetery, what would you get?  You would get an awesome debut
short film from the twisted mind of illustrator Gris Grimly called Cannibal Flesh Riot!

In Grimly's debut, he manages to deliver a 1950s feel while using a very modern technique.   The sets are cool.  The characters have a comic book feel to them.  Amazingly, his use of CGI isn't annoying and in many cases, you almost don't notice it.  There is a very cool stop motion animation sequence which, although probably not necessary to tell the story, helps to achieve the vintage feel that makes the film so appealing.  Basically, for a low-budget film Cannibal Flesh Riot is very easy to watch.

My only real problem with this short is that the dialog taking us through the film isn't as entertaining as it could be.  It is clever and serves the purpose of helping to round out the characters' personalities.  I just think it's the one area that could have been improved.  Still,  actors David Backhaus and Dustin Loreque do an excellent job of portraying the two ghouls, the story is clever and the ending is quite an unexpected twist.  Even the music works well for the film.  I look forward to seeing what Grimly will do next!

Gore-o-meter rating: 2 out of 5 (For a film called Cannibal Flesh Riot, there's not a lot of gore)

Skin-o-meter: 0 out of 5 (No skin)
